“saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her.  Untie them and bring them to me.”

The peculiar thing is “at once.”  The disciples wouldn’t have to go searching for a donkey, but as soon as they entered the village they would see the donkey with her colt.

Another strange thing was that they were to just take the donkey.  For all practical purposes it looked like thievery.  But Jesus makes a contingency for this in the next verse.

“If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away” (Mt 21:3).

Perhaps God had already prepared someone’s heart to give.  He often does that.
