For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[b] When Saul had sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him.

Home is a sacred place.  It’s your place of rest and reconnection with those you love.  It’s that time when you regain your perspective on life and take a pause from the challenges of the day.

Except for when your house is surrounded by those trying to kill you.

Then it becomes a fortress.

But David saw another fortress.  Another refuge.  And it wasn’t his house.

You are my strength, I watch for you;
    you, God, are my fortress,
     my God on whom I can rely.

14 They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,
    and prowl about the city.
15 They wander about for food
    and howl if not satisfied.
16 But I will sing of your strength,
    in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
    my refuge in times of trouble.

17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
you, God, are my fortress,
my God on whom I can rely.

Getting attacked by those who oppose you is difficult.  Being hunted by those who want to kill you is worse.  But David found the place of refuge.  In God alone.

Yesterday was the place of attack for me.  Just as I was praying to God for “not this” to happen, that very thing happened.   It’s times like this where we choose to believe that God is good and knows better.  Even when our hearts are completely in the opposite place.

But what I found is that I’m not as mature as David.  My heart doesn’t rest on its own in the care of God as easily as I like.

So I called in backup prayer.

And my heart found its rest.

And today my heart can see the work of God more clearly.

Today I have new truths to trust in Him.

One day I hope to become like David…who can trust even when evil lurks in the shadows
