1. “God needed another angel in heaven” often said when someone dies.  No, he didn’t.  It makes him out to be a cruel God.  He has legions of angels.  He doesn’t need your one and only.  It’s like saying God has countless angels but he wants to take away from you the one that matters to you.  It embitters people towards God.z

  2. “God will not give you more than you can handle.”  Paul says this, “We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself” 2 Cor 1:8.  Life is war.   There are evil forces.  Our souls are the battlefield.  By saying this statement it would make it seem like life isn’t impossibly difficult at times.  News flash.  Sometimes, as Paul says, it’s beyond bearable.  Worse, when people say that, they minimize the pain and suffering in another person.

  3. “When you become content being single, God will bless you with a spouse.” – So God only blesses someone when they live in perfect righteousness?  And since when is marriage the cure for contentment?  Have you not seen the number of divorces in our country?  You think it’s because they’re all content in their marriage?  The danger is that this is works based religion– be righteous and God will bless you.  It belittles the person who has God-given longings.  Not only that but it sets marriages up as the bastion of contentment.  That makes marriage an idol.  It’s a double danger.

  4. “Everything happens for a reason.”  Say that to the little girl repeatedly raped by her uncle.  God can redeem all things.  But he is not the cause of all things.  This statement makes God the “reason” behind it all.

  5. “It doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you are sincere.” You can be sincere and sincerely wrong.  Hitler believed that the extermination of the Jews was the best and fastest way to improve the human race.  I’ve personally worked with child rapists in prison who firmly believed that they were “teaching the little ones about love.”  In India there are beliefs that if you are born into the lower caste it is of the gods and it’s wrong that you can never leave that situation.  What we believe changes everything.  Everything.
