They’ve become hookers of the worst kind. They don’t even care about faithfulness to their husband. Nor do they care about what is sacred. They
- curse
- lie
- steal
- commit adultery
- murder
Each of these is a violation of the sacred. A violation of a bond of trust.
And the priests are no better. They are as wicked and as sinful as the common man.
“The more the priests increased, the more they sinned against me; they exchanged their Glory for something disgraceful. They feed on the sins of my people and relish their wickedness” (v. 7).
The LORD says judgment is coming on them both.
Their indictment continues:
“They consult a wooden idol and are answered by a stick of wood” (v. 10)
“they have deserted the LORD to give themselves to prostitution, to old wine and new, which take away the understanding of my people” (v. 10)…”Even when their drinks are gone, they continue their prostitution; their rulers dearly love shameful ways” (v. 18).
Everyone had become corrupt — the priests and the people, the leaders and the locals. Especially tough was that those who were to lead Israel and be examples were the very ones leading in crime, rebellion and sinful behavior.
Seems like a news article from today.
Let us walk a different way. Lord, help us all.
