His mom asked. It wasn’t his time. But he did what she asked anyway.
Yes, this text is about so much more. But there’s such a human, tender side to Jesus. Even though it wasn’t his time, he did what his mom asked.
And truth be told, his mom probably wasn’t expecting a miracle. She just knew that her son could solve the problem and somehow save the honor of the newlywed couple on their most special day. And he did. With his first miracle.
Jesus changed water to wine. It was his first sign and the first time he revealed his glory.
What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
It’s actually endearing that the first way to reveal his glory was to lift up the poor and bring them honor. Jesus said he came not to be served, but to serve, and he did that here.
But it was also the moment where his glory and his identity were beginning to made known to the world. He wasn’t just any man. He wasn’t just a prophet. He was the Son of God.
More of his identity would be revealed. More of his glory was going to be shown.
Can you imagine being there? And hearing about the miracle?
The villagers, as we will see later on, wanted to see more. They wanted more signs. And Jesus would rebuke them for saying that their only form of belief was more signs (John 5:48).
Let’s have an honest moment here. I would probably have been one of those doubting people. If someone made such bold claims to their identity being the Messiah/Son of God, I would want proof. But you want to know the main proof Jesus accepted?
He wanted them to see that he was the fulfillment of the Scriptures – Moses, the Psalms and the Prophets. Repeatedly he says he is the fulfillment of these. His rebuke mainly was their obsessions with signs, wonders and miracles.
But even then, the people would not believe. He declared himself to be the fulfillment of the Scriptures. He loved people and performed signs, wonders and miracles while serving them.
Yes, they saw him as prophet (Matthew 16:13-20). But what more did they want?
When our hearts are bent to unbelief, that’s what we will get. When we trust God, though, and are searching for him, we will test it out according to the Scripture and the life of the one making the claims. Since Jesus passed those test, what more were they waiting for?
- He fulfilled every prophecy
- He performed miracles
- He lived a sinless life
- He even had a soft spot for his momma, honoring her as the Scripture say
Some got it right away. For others it took time, as in after the resurrection. But for many they chose to mock and walk away.
The same still happens today.
What about you?
What did it take for you?
What will it take?
John 2:1-11
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
