Fought For - Romans 8

Groans Around Us, an Army With Us – Romans 8

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Paul has just spoken about how the creations longs for the sons of God to be revealed.  It groans looking to the day when it will no longer be subjected to decay.  Then he talks about how man groans for the one day redemption of his own body.  That he too longs for the return of Jesus when all things will be restored.

And now Paul says, “in the same way, the Spirit” or “likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

What is he saying?

In the same way the creation is groaning for the sons of God to be revealed, the same way that mankind is groaning for the redemption of his/her own bodies, the Spirit is also groaning.  He is groaning to see Christ formed in us.

Why are we groaning?  Because we are weak and powerless to enact the promises ourselves.  We must wait until God unfolds these things in his timing.   But man is not without help during our waiting.

The Spirit himself is interceding for us in our weakness.

Think about that for a moment.  The Spirit of God is interceding for YOU.  The Spirit is praying to the Father on your behalf, longing to see Christ revealed in YOU.

If you think you are alone in this world and no one fights for you, you are wrong.  Right here it says the Spirit is interceding for you.  Not only that but Jesus himself is interceding for you as we will see very shortly (v. 34).

So you not only have the Spirit interceding for you, you also have the Son intereceding for you.

There’s a part of us that groans more deeply than we understand.  Our bodies are wasting away.  We struggle with sin.  And yet we are not without help.  We have the intercession of the Spirit and the Son.

There’s even more.  It says God says angels as ministering servants to those who inherit salvation (Hebrews 1:14).  So again, another aspect of the forces of God working for Him in You.

Be encouraged.

Be very encouraged.

Heaving is fighting for you in a way beyond your understanding.

So don’t lose heart.

Strengthen yourself.

And be bold in Him.
