Giving Honor where Honor is Due – 1 Cor 16:15-18

Stephanas was special to Paul.  He was the firstfruits of the work and ministry in Achaia.  It appears the first thing Stephanas did was devote himself to the service of the Lord’s people.  He joined in the work and labored at it.  Not only that, but he was a financial supporter for Paul, making sure his ministry continued.

“You know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the Lord’s people. I urge you, brothers and sisters, to submit to such people and to everyone who joins in the work and labors at it.  I was glad when Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus arrived, because they have supplied what was lacking from you.  For they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition” (1 Cor 16:15-18).

Paul wasn’t afraid to honor men like Stephanas and his cohort.  Not only that but he wasn’t afraid to speak about the practical matters such as finance.  The church in Corinth was not able to fully supply Paul, but the household of Stephanas was able to make up for that lack, refreshing everyone.

“Such men deserve recognition.”

Paul was always pointing to his team, lifting them up, honoring them for the service, and creating a community of respect.  When leaders do this, building one another up and honoring others, doing so from the heart, everyone benefits.  It also causes people to want to be part of the team.
