The Corinthians had issues. Not small issues either. They were divided, they entertained sexual immorality, they did not honor their spiritual parents, and while they loved spiritual gifts, they forgot the most important thing — love. 1 Corinthians is a rebuke letter and calling them to grow up. But it was done in love:
“I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children… For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel” (1 Cor 4:14-15).
What do we learn from his rebukes?
1. Division dishonors God. Stay united and don’t divide over your leaders.
This is just as relevant today. In a world of super-Christians and tribal following, there is a sentiment that villainized some leaders and deifies others. This should not be.
2. The message of the cross is central.
All preaching, evangelism, and more centers upon the cross of Christ. The cross is the power of God. Anything less is problematic.
3. Don’t destroy a weaker brother.
Your behavior and choices can cause great harm to other believers. Be cognizant of your behavior.
4. Do not tolerate persistent, unrepentant sexual immorality
What we tolerate spreads. If someone is in sin, work to restore them. In love, confront them and take the time to lead them to truth. But if someone over time is persistent and unrepentant, then there needs to be action.
5. Stop suing one another.
It is better to be wronged than to sue a brother or sister. If there are problems, then deal with it internally.
6. Marriage
Singleness is a gift that frees you towards more ministries. But marriage is good, as well. And if you do marry, marry in the Lord.
7. Take care of those in ministry with your finances.
Those in ministry work hard in the Lord. Provide what they need to do the work assigned to them.
8. In your worship gatherings, respect one another
It is not a time of competition. Use your gifts to strengthen the body.
9. Spiritual gifts serve one another, so keep love as the center
Spiritual gifts should be desired. But they should not overtake that which is most important, and that is love.
10. Hold fast to the Essentials of Faith
The essentials are… essential. Do not compromise. Do not let go. Hold fast to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and his appearances.
These are all important and powerful things that can be learned as a church. It makes one think, what would Paul say to the churches today in your city?
What would Paul say to you personally?
