To Know Jesus and Make Him Known

money

Green or Glory – Mt 6:24

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Money is perhaps one of the most deceptive things out there.  Very few people on the planet think they have “enough.”  It concerns us a lot of the time and we wonder on this earth we are going to make it.  At the same time we do not always have the best of spending habits.

You cannot serve both God and money.

I used to think this text wasn’t a big issue.  I didn’t have a lot of money and I didn’t care.  But lately the responsibilities I have and the situation I’m in causes me think constantly about money, because there is a definitive need.  And a need to soon remedy those issues.  But the problem is money becomes the focus.  Instead of looking more towards the Lord and seeking him on pertinent issues, I’m trying to drive ahead with or without him.  It was easier when I was paid hourly and things were consistent, but when you are starting your own business it’s something that weighs a lot on you.

So easily money can become a God.

But the Scriptures are clear.  You cannot serve both.  It’s not the issue of how much or how little you have, but it’s your relationship with the respective Master.  It’s not that God wants us poor (or that he wants us filthy rich), it’s about who is influencing our lives.  Who are we giving authority to?
