Isn’t that a bold statement!  “My heart is confident” (Ps 108:1) as he pleads for deliverance.  Not the false confidence that comes from psyching yourself up, but confidence based on the history and the promises of God.

David begins by stating he will sing to the LORD.  In fact, he this which is fun:

”I will wake up the dawn” (Ps 108:2).  Not being a morning person I’m not sure I could follow suit.  But at the same time, David is a king with much on his plate but he arises before the dawn to worship, to praise, to sing and give thanks to the Lord.

He recalls the promises of God that God will protect His people and will triumph over the enemies of Israel.

But then David faces the reality, God has not been supporting Israel in its campaigns (Ps 108:11).

God, haven’t your reject us?
God, You do not march out with our armies.

One thing David knows for certain is that “human help is worthless” (Ps 108:12).  As a king that is key.  You can call on your allies all you want, but without God’s help your human help is unreliable.

But God was in covenant with Israel and David knew that.  Thus he could have confidence if they looked to him with pure hearts, God would hear and respond according to his covenant promises.
