To Know Jesus and Make Him Known

A Firm Place to Stand, A Safe Place to Be – Ps 61

This world is very shaky right now and a firm place to stand a safe place to be is only found in the Lord.  No longer do we have the facade of man-made safety.

David opens this psalm crying out to God, admitting that his “heart is without strength” (Ps 61:1).  It was scary times.  The enemies were stronger and more powerful than David.  And David often was afraid.  He never adopted the foolish “no fear” false bravado.  He said simply, ‘my heart is without strength.’  And many times, ‘I’m afraid.’

In this prayer though he looks to the Lord.

God, hear my cry; pay attention to my prayer” (Ps 61:1).

Then he prays this:

Lead me to a rock that is high above me” (Ps 61:2) – a safe place to stand

You have been a strong tower in the of face of the enemy” (Ps 61:3)- a safe place to be

He then asks that God would “appoint love and truth to guard him” (Ps 61:7).  I like this picture.  Let love and truth be guards to my left and to my right.  Not one over the other, but both working together.

And David?

He would then “continually sing of Your name, fulfilling my vows day by day” (Ps 61:8).

When things were going well, David committed to sing.  When things were going terrible and it was scary times, David committed to sing.  Not only that but he committed to the Lord that he would serve and follow him “day by day.”   And that is the very best thing you can do when things get scary.
