To Know Jesus and Make Him Known

From Sadness to Celebration – Ps 30

When God breaks through, the heart erupts in joy.  Especially when you were sure you were doomed to death, and now are tasting the very breath again of life.

I will exalt you, LORD, because You have lifted me up and have not allowed my enemies to triumph over me” (Ps 30:1).

Then David recalls how he called on the Lord and the Lord delivered:

I cried to You for help, and You healed me.  LORD, You brought me up from Sheol; You spared me from among those going down to the Pit” (Ps 30:2-3)

Sing to Yahweh, you His faithful ones, and praise His holy  name” (Ps 30:4).

David then says the same thing but in a new way.

Will the dust praise You?  Will it proclaim your truth?” (Ps 30:9).

Then David again says the Lord delivered him which leads him to worship, and a stirring end to this song:

You turned my lament into dancing; You removed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, so that I can sing to You and not be silent.  LORD my God, I will praise You forever” (Ps 30:11-12).

I see in this psalm some really great truths:

1) Joy is the sign of the mature.  When we think of someone mature and wise, we think of them as serious and a bit stoic.  But for the God-follower, joy, song and dance is the sign of the mature.

2) Praise, singing and worship is a natural outflow of responsiveness to the goodness of God.  Let us sing and praise his name.

3) God wants to deliver us from the spirit of heaviness into the spirit of gladness.
