You’ve probably heard the song. In fact, you can’t even read this psalm without the tune coming to your mind. It’s Stand By Me by Ben E King. It was based off of this psalm.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
Though Ben E King made this song about his “darling, darling,” it originally and still is a psalm about the faithfulness of God. A God who is our refuge and strength, and is one that we can trust.
I think more and more we need to know and mediate on this psalm. Quite frankly, the world is on fire and falling apart. The earth is giving way and the mountains are falling into the heart of the sea. The waters are roaring and foaming.
But God is faithful. He is our refuge and strength. Therefore we will not be afraid when everything falls apart.
God says this of Zion, his holy city: “God will help her when the morning dawns” (Ps 46:5).
The morning after. How many have needed help the morning after.
“Nations rage, kingdoms topple; the earth melts when He lifts His voice. The Lord of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold” (Ps 46:7).
“Stop your fighting–and know that I am God, exalted among the nations, exalted on the earth” (Ps 46:10).
We need this reminder lodged so deep into our heart that it is impossible to dislodge.
Even when kingdoms topple, God is still with His people.
