Church is about Order and Honor - 1 Cor 14

The Sum of the Matter – 1 Cor 14:36-40

The Corinthians had a problem and it was one of spiritual superiority.  Because of the spiritual gifts they walked in, they felt they were better than others.  It sounds like even internally it was a competition fest and not a true honoring of one other.

“Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached?  If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord.  If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.  So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.  But all things should be done decently and in order” (1 Cor 14:36-40).

Paul did not want them to throw out tongue speaking or prophecy.  That would be missing the point.  Instead, he was calling on them to walk humbly before one another, and honor one another’s gifts.  What does this look like?  It looks like waiting your turn to share, speaking respectfully, walking in right order, and sharing appropriately.

Church is about one-anothering.  We must keep this in mind.
