You cannot lead people where you have not been. You cannot point people to where you personally have not gone. When the blind lead the blind, it’s foolish.
He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.
Perhaps when Jesus was teaching on this he was speaking of the Pharisees whom he called “blind guides.” They were not open to see Jesus for who he was. He is calling them to open their eyes, because if they don’t, they and all their followers will fall into a pit.
It’s also a call to the disciple. We will become like our teacher. Who do we follow? Jesus? Or someone else?
It’s Ok to follow those following Jesus. It’s called discipleship. But if Jesus is not our center, we too may stumble and not raise to that greater than the one who teaches us.
