One’s value is not only about how much one is loved, but how much they are protected by another. Take for example the Crown Jewels. They are not only well-taken care of, cherished and displayed, but they have extensive security systems around them any one who touches them is held guilty.
Perhaps this is why I feel so much comfort in the cursing.
When God called Abraham out of Ur, he told him to leave his people, land, family and well…everything. But he also said that Abraham would be a blessing, and that he would curse anyone who cursed him.
God was imparting great value to Abraham’s life. His life would matter significantly and he was so treasured by God, that anyone who cursed him would find himself dealing with God, not just Abraham.
It’s not that anyone wants to see another cursed, but the value that God covers Abraham with is extraordinary.
He was to say this again to the nation of Israel:
- “He found him in a desert land, And in the howling waste of a wilderness; He encircled him, He cared for him, He guarded him as the pupil of His eye” Deut 32:10
- “For thus says the LORD of hosts, “After glory He has sent me against the nations which plunder you, for he who touches you, touches the apple of His eye” (Zech 2:8)
One might find it strange to find comfort in the cursing, but it’s not the cursing that is the appeal. It’s the value and protection that God places on his people.
O Lord,
“Keep me as the apple of the eye; Hide me in the shadow of Your wings” Ps 17:18
