We all know that the love of money is the root of all evil. Not money but the love of it. And while some people pursue wealth as they want to be rich, rich, rich. And powerful. I think the majority stumble with wealth because they fear lack.
How will I pay my rent/mortgage?
How can I pay for my kids’ needs?
How can I keep up with my bills?
So we dig in harder. Working more. Stressing more. Fighting with those that share the financial load more.
It’s this that makes me wonder if the reason why Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus was his fear of lack. We know he was dipping into the coffers of the disciple’s funds, and when Mary “wasted” her alabaster jar on Jesus that was the final straw. Jesus didn’t stand up to her and he realized the financial gains were not coming. So he “sold” Jesus to the chief priests and teachers of the law for a fee. For betraying him.
And I do wonder if it was a fear of lack for him and not just about getting supremely wealthy and powerful. And even if that were the case, those needs come out of a deep-rooted insecurity.
It’s ugly.
The truth is that seldom will we have “enough.” There isn’t “enough money” in this world much of the time. And even if we had an abundance, it doesn’t take much for it to be gone in an instant. History has shown that over and over. Money and wealth are not the places of rest.
We must learn that only God is.
God is the one who does miracles. The Lord is the one who leads us to what we should do. Faith in Him is our rest.
So repent we must. Restart again and again. And run after the rest in the Lord.
Because money can be very deceptive.
In all of our hearts.
Mark 4:19 …but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.
