Are we about to be vomited? Because if we’re not close, I think we may be en route on a downhill slide. And I’m not talking about the lukewarm behavior mentioned in Rev 3:16 that is more common. But the Lev 20 vomiting.
The Lord said he drove out the inhabitants before Israel in Canaan because they practiced detestable practices.
Lev 18:24 “‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. 25 Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants.
Lev 20:22 “‘Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out. 23 You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you. Because they did all these things, I abhorred them.
What did they do? There were three main things.
1) They sacrificed their children to the god of Molech. Molech was a nasty looking hollow idol in which a raging fire was built inside. The people worshipped Molech by offering their children to this god. History records that the people would beat the drums so load that the mothers couldn’t hear the screams of their children. Then the baby was put on the ledge and burned up by the fire.
I’m not sure how they convinced the family but perhaps they said it was better as satisfying the god helped the people. Or perhaps it was the drum of “choice,” or that babies were an “inconvenience” or “not fully human yet.”
Whatever they were told, the parents bought it and the babies were sacrificed by the thousands upon thousands. It was abhorrent to God.
2) They dishonored their mothers and fathers. They even cursed them at times. Spoke against them. Didn’t take care of them.
3) They they were convinced that their sexual lives were their own prerogative, not the Lord’s or anyone else’s to tell them what to do. So they engaged in adultery, incest with immediate family and extended family, practiced homosexuality, and had sexual relations during a woman’s monthly cycle.
Lev 18:25 Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants.
Lev 20:22 “‘Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out.
These crimes against God and against the people and against the land were so serious that two full chapters of Leviticus are almost identical in dealing with them (Lev 18, 20). The Lord abhorred such practices.
And all three sound too familiar. At some point the land will vomit us out. And the problem is, most people are too distracted to really care.
Either that or they hear the drums beating out “choice” or “rights” or “be nice to everyone,”–anything that drowns out even the Spirit inside of even the Christian.
