It was time to divide up the duties of priests among the sons of Aaron.  Two of the sons of Aaron had been killed because of their carnal desecration of the temple, and two remained.  From their households, they were divided up between “the officers of the sanctuary and officers of God” (1 Chr 24:5).  Perhaps this means the duties of the holy things and the ones offering the sacrifices.

The assignments were chosen by lot and it was written down and recorded not just in front of the king, but also the officers, priest, Ahimelech and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites.  This way everyone knew and had a sense of their individual responsibilities.

This administration of roles and responsibilities in an organized and clear way is important.  God is God of order and of peace.  This is put so well in a Facebook post that I saw the other day:

“The gift of administration is as important as the gifts of faith, miracles and healing.  There are no secondary gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The overflow of Spirit-filled administration is peace.  And lots of it.

Only the one who made you gets to define the value of your spiritual gifting.  The God who creates us in His image does not give clearance rack gifts.

When we overvalue or undervalue certain spiritual gifting, we create an environment of spiritual envy and comparison.”

Clear administration brings peace.  Clear roles and responsibilities bring peace.  They may seem simple, but these things are important in relationships.
