David had sinned before God.  Was it Bathsheba?  Was it something else?

God, You know my foolishness, and my guilt acts are not hidden from You.  Do not let those who put their hope in You be disgraced because of me, Lord God of Hosts; do not let those who seek You be humiliated because of me, God of Israel…shame has covered my face” (Ps 69:4-7).

But if that weren’t enough, his enemies were kicking him and mocking him while he was down.  And some of it is not justified.

Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head…though I did not steal, I must repay” (Ps 69:4).

I mourned and fasted, but it brought me insults.  I wore sackcloth as my clothing and I was a joke to them.  Those who sit at the city gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me” (Ps 69:10-10).

David prays that God would hold them accountable for the deplorable behavior.

Pour out Your rage on them, and let Your burning anger overtake them.  Make their fortification desolate; may no one live in their tents.  For they persecute the one You struck and talk about the pain of those You wounded” (Ps 69:24-26).

Then David prays to God.

But as for me–poor and in pain–let Your salvation protect me, God.  I will praise God’s name with song and exalt him with thanksgiving” (Ps 69:29-31).

There are a couple of things we can glean from this.

1) Don’t kick a man/woman while they are down.  This week that is happening to Alex Baldwin (actor who accidentally shot and killed someone on set) and many others.  It’s not a time to take advantage of a person’s brokenness.

2)  Just because we are down, even if it from our own sin, in repentance we can still worship and praise the Lord.

3)  Just because we blew it, God does not abandon us.
