Many, including the likes of Ben Shapiro, say that the Old Testament never says Jesus is deity or the Son of God (read your Bible please, Ben).
Also when we are talking “Son,” we are not talking literaly, physical Son. We are talking Son in relationship. Just as we call in the US the wife of the President the First Lady. She isn’t the first lady to ever exist. It is a title of position.
But back to the texts. Where does the Bible say Jesus is the Son in the Old Testament?
I saw that again someone was making that assertion in a comment. But that is not the case. Just look at Daniel.
“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
The Son of Man approaches the Ancient of Days. All the peoples of the earth will worship him, he receives an everlasting kingdom, he has all glory and sovereign power, and a kingdom that will never be destroyed.
This is the Son of Man.
These are words of deity.
And they are also words that Jesus uses for himself.
But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” (Mark 14:61-62)
And then in another place.
The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.
But Jesus remained silent.
The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy (Mt 26:63-35).
What was the blasphemy? It was that Jesus was claiming to be God and the fulfillment of this Scripture.
But there’s more to the story.
It says in other places that Jesus was the Son of God and God in the flesh in the Old Testament.
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Is 9:6)
The Son will be called Mighty God. This is the exact same word, el gibbor, that is. used in the next chapter.
A remnant will return, a remnant of Jacob
will return to the Mighty God.
This is the words for the Son. He is Mighty God. Then there’s Proverbs 30:4.
Who has gone up to heaven and come down?
Whose hands have gathered up the wind?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is the name of his son?
Surely you know!
And also Psalm 2:7-12.
7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son;
today I have become your father.
8 Ask me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance,
the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You will break them with a rod of iron;
you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”
10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;
be warned, you rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear
and celebrate his rule with trembling.
12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry
and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Jesus is the Son of God and He is God. In the Old Testament. And also the New Testament.
As it says in John 1:1 about Jesus:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
We read this again in John 17:1-2, 5 and in almost every page of the New Testament.
After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him… And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
