Is Mark 16:9-20 Part of Scripture? Is it a Problem?

If you read almost any Bible that has the Gospel of Mark, you will come to a spacer at this point where it says the earliest manuscripts do not have this section.

It’s true. Mark 16:8 ends in a very abrupt way. Which is strange for a gospel to end. And some half way decent manuscripts have the alternative ending and some do not.

This could be a problem if what was taught in this extra section added anything new. But it really doesn’t. Everything that is taught in these verses are also taught elsewhere.

  • The great commission is taught elsewhere (Mt 28:18-20)
  • Paul picked up snakes and it did not hurt them at all (Acts 28:3)
  • There are other commands to pray for sick people to get well (Mt 10:8)
  • We know Jesus sat at the right hand of God (Col 3:1)

If anything, this section looks like a summarization of the events and Jesus’ final teaching.
