Once again we find a psalm of David seeking refuge and help from the Lord, except this time he is old

Don’t discard me in my old age; as my strength fails, do not abandon me” (Ps 71:9).

Even when I am old and gray, God, do not abandon me” (Ps 71:18).

There’s also the recognition that God has been his refuge, strength and helper even from his youth:

For You are my hope, Lord God, my confidence from my youth” (Ps 71:5).

God, you have taught me from my youth” (Ps 71:17).

But even though he is old, he still has enemies that hunt him down.

For my enemies talk about me, and those who spy on me plot together, saying, “God has abandoned him; chase him and catch him, for there is no one to rescue him” (Ps 71:11).

Troubles don’t end, just because we get old.  But the Lord delivers us.

You caused me to experience many troubles and misfortunes, but You will revive me again.  You will bring me up again, even from the depths of the hearth.  You will increase my honor and comfort me once again” (Ps 71:20-21).

But not matter, whether young or old, in trouble or in peace, David never ceases to praise the Lord.

“My praise is always about You” (Ps 71:6).

“My mouth is full of praise and honor to You all day long” (Ps 71:8)

“But I will hope continually and will praise You more and more” (Ps 71:14).

Therefore I will praise You with a harp for Your faithfulness, my God; I will sing to You with a lyre, Holy One of Israel.  My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to You because You have redeemed me.  Therefore my tongue will proclaim Your righteousness all day long…” (Ps 71:22-24).
