To Know Jesus and Make Him Known

They Dug a Pit, Then They Fell In – Ps 57

You’ve maybe heard the song (if you’re older),

Be exalted, O God,
Above the heavens,
Let your glory be over
All the earth

The context though is something that would make any of us sing that at the top of our lungs.  For it is the context of great deliverance.

David was in the cave hiding from Saul.  They were utterly surrounded and all Saul would have needed to do was find them in the cave and they would all be dead.  But through a very miraculous deliverance, David and his men were saved (1 Sam 22-28).

David often prayed that his enemies would fall into the very pit they dug for David.  And that is what happened.  Not literally, but figuratively.  The trap backfired.

They dug a pit ahead of me, but they fell into it!” (Ps 57:6).

It’s actually a pretty good prayer.  Lord, let the plans of wickedness fall onto the very laps of the ones who conceived the evil.  Kind of like a Haman kind of moment.

But David was delivered from what seemed like certain death.  And out of that, David worshiped.

My heart is confident, God, my heart is confident.
I will sing; I will sing praises.
 Wake up, my soul!
Wake up, harp and lyre!
I will wake up the dawn.
 I will praise You, Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to You among the nations.
For Your faithful love is as high as the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches the clouds.
 God, be exalted above the heavens;
let Your glory be over the whole earth.
