Listening to the Voice of the One – Ps 4

David is surrounded by voices telling him what to do.  As king, it isn’t easy as there is so much pressure.

He has the voices on the outside dishonoring and disrespecting him. The truth is the desire to be accepted by one’s fellow man is intense pressure.

Then there are the voices near him asking, “Who can show us any good?” (Ps 4:6).

David is distressed.

Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer” (Ps 4:1).

It’s a difficult time.  And when those times come, one is tested.

Despair abounds and he could go to the place of self-pity, compromise, or trying to work one’s own miracle.  Which one are you most likely to do?

David though, a man after God’s own heart, even in the face of discouragement puts his trust in the Lord.

Know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself” (Ps 4:3).

He admonishes the others:

Offer right sacrifices and trust in the Lord” (Ps 4:5).

And he bears the fruit of that fruit:

I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, LORD make me dwell in safety” (Ps 4:8).

He was going to have victory over his feelings.  Faith.  Trust.  Rest.

A lesson we have to learn repeatedly.
