Human Help is Worthless – Ps 60

It can be said of a few nations now but this is how David was feeling at certain point in their history (Ps 60:1-2):

God, You have rejected us;
You have broken out against us;
You have been angry. Restore us!
You have shaken the land and split it open.
Heal its fissures, for it shudders.

There are times in a nation’s history or even world history where the land is shaken and split open.  We must cry out to God to heal its fissures.  When God is not with us, fighting for us, it’s dreadful.

David said that God no longer marched out with the armies of Israel, the chosen of God. And yet he still knows where his help comes from–the Lord (Ps 60:11-12).

Give us aid against the foe,
for human help is worthless.

With God we will perform valiantly;
He will trample our foes.

It’s a reminder of what David has written earlier (Ps 20:7):

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.”

It’s tempting to put our trust in man’s thinking, military might and doing things in the ways of the world.  But these things always collapse.  People are not safe.  Man’s thinking is flawed.  Even the mighty fall.  Human help is worthless.  But God?  His help is different.

In these crazy unsettling times, we need to remember this.  To turn to God.  To expect miracles.  To not place our faith in ourselves or in others.  He alone is the rock unmovable.
