The Earth Feared and Grew Quiet when God… – Ps 76

Some say this Psalm is about the victory over the Assyrians and Sennacherib.  Regardless, it is a psalm that stands back amazed at the work of God.

Jerusalem is the heartbeat of heaven and it was being threatened by Isarel’s enemies.  But God.

When God shows up on the scene, no one can stand before him.

None of the warriors was able to lift a hand.  At Your rebuke, God of Jacob, both chariot and horse lay still.  And You–You are to be feared.  When You are angry, who can stand before You?” (Ps 76:5-6).

When God intervenes, it can be downright scary for the enemies of God.

“The earth feared and grew quiet when God rose up to judge and to save the lowly of the earth” (Ps 76:9).

Those who touch the apple of His eye will pay a price.  It is good and fearful to be the Lord’s.

Make and keep your vows to the Lord your God; let all who are around Him bring tribute to the awe-inspiring One.  He humbles the spirit of leaders; He is feared by the kings of the earth” (Ps 76:11-12).
