Storytelling is literally like handing someone a loaded gun. A good story can lead any soldier in any time in history to attack a peaceful people and loot, rape, kill and more. A good story will also raise someone up to do greater things in history than they ever thought possible.
If you tell a good story, connection to the emotion, direction them where to go and make them feel like the hero for taking action, a person will do anything.
I’ve been studying storytelling lately because my brain is so left brained. Yet, this is a right-brained culture and season we are in. And with storytelling, I’ve always flailed at the task even in everyday conversation.
But as I’m learning, my eyes are open. I see the stories that are told to create wars, stories that are told to create divisions among people (mostly by news people), and stories that we tell ourselves that either make us or break us.
All of life is shaped by story. Perhaps that’s why the ancients placed such a high value on it. Not just to preserve history but to shape it.
Pick a news station and you will a main story with all other smaller stories supporting it. It’s not news or truth, it’s about fitting into the story line.
It truly is scary how powerful story is to move people. More important than facts, data, charts or anything else.
We must tell more stories. True stories. I must tell stories. And we must figure this out.
