17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
When I order a package, when it is fulfilled, the rules change. No longer are people collecting money, searching for items, packaging those items, and sending them out. Once the fulfillment is complete, the work and the rules regarding that work are done.
In the same what Jesus did was fulfill the Law. And in doing so, things changed. It was a new day. The old was completed, the new had arrived. Now it was time to implement the “package” that was ordered to put in a less than great way but to make the point.
Jesus didn’t fit the box they wanted him to be in. He was not a rebel in that his heart was angry and bitter against a system. But nor was he someone held prisoners to laws, rituals and rules that were not of man nor fit the intent of the law.
They wanted to kill him because he claimed to be God yet he “broke” the Sabbath by healing sick people on the day of rest. They would rescue an animal if it was in trouble on the Sabbath, but when it came to power and rule they people cared for rules above people. That was their grounds for accusing Jesus as a lawbreaker.
But Jesus said in no way was he lawbreaker. He was a law fulfiller. He wasn’t setting aside the Law, rather the Law was fulfilled in Him. And now some things had changed.
