Exercise your Gifts - Romans 12

Get out and Exercise…Your Gift – Romans 12:6-8

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching;  the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

God has given us gifts for the greater good of others.  Most typically walk in our gifts in somewhat of a casual level.  But how intentional are we to growing them and using them?

Paul says we are called to exercise our gifts.  And he lists some here:

  • Prophecy
  • Service
  • Teaching
  • Encouragement
  • Generosity
  • Leadership
  • Mercy

Of particular interest in the first gift, likely meant as a statement for all gifts, it says to to exercise our gifts “in proportion to our faith.”

It actually does take faith to walk more than just casually in our gifts.  If our gift is service, how much are we willing to trust the Lord to serve Him in more than the usual ways?  What about generosity?  Or leadership?

When we walk in our gifts, challenges are inevitable.  Oftentimes the challenges can be from other Christians.  Discouragement can be real.   That’s why it takes faith.

Walking in our gifts can also exact a financial cost.  For example someone who is walking in mercy ministry and helping those in need often must believe the Lord for financial provision.   This takes faith.

Even teaching ministry takes faith.  Where do we teach? What people are to be reached?  How will the doors open?

Paul offers the invitation that all of us are to use our gifts.  We must step out and do so in faith.  The greater our faith, the greater the blessing for others.

Because in the end, it’s not about us.  It’s not about me.  It’s for the strengthening of of the body of Christ. And if we are all working in our unique gifts, with humility and service to one another, we will become the very beautiful bride of Christ that He deserves.
