thief night

He Doesn’t Come as a Thief in the Night… 1 Thess 5:2-4

It is thought that when Jesus returns it will be as a thief in the night.  But I don’t think so.  Yes, the Scriptures say that this is how he will come this way (1 Thess 5:2).  So what do I mean?

Jesus comes only as a thief in the night… to those who aren’t expecting him.

Grooms do not show up to a wedding suddenly unannounced.  There is gradual anticipation as all those expecting him feel it in the air, see the bustle of readiness happening, and then that moment when bride and groom see each other face to face.  It’s not just, “Surprise, we’re here!”  For those anticipating him, it is not unexpected.

As the Scripture says,

but you brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief” (1 Thess 5:4).

Jesus’ return will be a surprise only to those who aren’t anticipating it.  For the rest of us, we can hear the music building and the excitement of the people and the anticipation from the servants.

Why do I say all this?

Because I’m beginning to hear the music.
