To Know Jesus and Make Him Known

Ignoring Other Voices – Ps 3

‘Your foolish religion will not save you!’

‘You think God will save you but it’s the military that has the teeth!’

‘You need to work your own deliverance. God helps them who help themselves.’

Perhaps these were some of the things that King David was hearing.  But we know he was hearing something akin to trust in God was worthless.

Many are saying of me, “God will not deliver him” (Ps 3:2/NIV).

But David thinks differently.  He does not trust in delivering himself, but in God’s salvation.

But you are a shield around me, O LORD, you bestow glory on me and lift up my head” (Ps 3:3).

David rejects the advice of the masses and perhaps even his close advisors and puts his trust in the Lord.  His trust is so secure that

  1. He sleeps.  Only people who trust in their deliverance can sleep (v. 5)
  2. He does not fear.  His eyes may seen 10,000 against him but he does not give way to fear (v. 6)

Instead he calls upon God to intervene.  He trust Him for deliverance until the purposes of God are fulfilled.

This is what made David great.  He trusted God.  It often was bleak and his life hanging by a thread, but he knew God had purposes for his life that had yet to be fulfilled.

Furthermore he didn’t trust what his eyes saw.  He trust what He knew about God’s ways.

David was renowned to be “a man after God’s own heart.”.

We can learn much from him.
