Jesus, More than Just a Prophet – Luke 2:1-40

There was nothing normal about the birth of Jesus. From conception, Gabriel appeared to Mary and said she was going to birth the promised Son of God, the Messiah. Her cousin Elizabeth confirmed it. But it isn’t stopping there.

When the shepherds were out in the field a very, scary angel appeared to them. He told them, as they always tell the people, to not be afraid. But that a baby was born who was the Messiah. And that this event was one of great joy!

Then more angels appeared. And they too worshiped.

About a week later Jesus is taken to the temple. There a man has waited his whole life, looking at every baby every single time. Because had had a promise. A promise that he would not die before he saw the Savior.

He was old. I’m sure he wondered if his vision was true. The years came and the years went. And then one day Jesus is brought to the temple. He knows. He KNOWS.

This is the One.

Simeon says he has seen the source of the salvation of his people. He can now die. In peace. The Lord has fulfilled his promise.

It didn’t stop there. Another one was in the temple. Anna. She lost her husband so very young. Instead of chasing after men, she devoted herself to worship, prayer and fasting. The temple was her home. For 60+ years that is all she did.

Then one day a young couple comes in with a baby. And she knows.

It is the Messiah. The one who will save their people.

She gave thanks to God. And then became the first of the first evangelists, telling everyone abut the child who would redeem Jerusalem.

Time after time after time the identity of this child was revealed. He wasn’t just another prophet. He was going to be the salvation of his people.

Who was this child?

That is the question of your life.
