To Know Jesus and Make Him Known

O Lord, Judge Righteously – Ps 7

Psalm 7 in summation:

O God, save me from those who hunt me.
If I’ve done wrong, I will gladly pay the price.

O Lord, rise up of judge of all the peoples,
let the righteous prosper and the wicked come to an end.

I trust in God
who is a righteous judge

He will judge justly so
be sure to repent of evil.

The evil make their plans,
but their evil will come back on them.

I will thank the Lord for His righteousness;
I will sing about the name of Yahweh the Most High” (Ps 8:17)

Thoughts:

1) Throughout Scripture there are others who openly say, “God, if I’ve done wrong, then let me pay the price.”  (Josh 22:22; Job 31: 38-40; 34:32; Acts 25:11).  It isn’t asking God to side with evil, but to side with righteousness.

2) Especially in the psalms there is a clear sense of asking God to bless the righteous and punish the wicked.  In our NT sense we have a “be nice to the wicked” and there’s foundation for that.  Jesus said to “love your enemies.”  I think it makes me think as everyone is “good in their own eyes.”  Ask anyone if they think they are a good person and they will say yes.  Ask anyone fighting a military battle and they will think they are the good ones.

3)  God is clearly seen as a righteous judge.  He isn’t just a nice judge who loves and forgives and accept everyone, but he is a judge who judges justly.  That means that wickedness gets punished.  That’s what being a good judge is all about.

Righteousness and justice are important to hold everything together.  When these are lost, everything begins to fall apart.  We are watching this before our eyes as so many have left the path of righteousness, and even justice is starting to diminish in the media, in the courtrooms, and in all that is said and done.

There are seasons of life where we have to appeal to God for righteousness and justice as it isn’t transpiring on earth.  David was in such a place.  He was the rightful king but his own son was hunting him down.  He was on the run and exhausted.  How was there to be justice when he was the king?

But David knew he could appeal to God.  An he did.  God isn’t a quick fix but he knew in the timing of heaven God would give him justice.   Whether we live or whether we die, God will be just.
