Over the Shoulder Social Media

On apps such as YouTube, x and others (not Facebook), you have to ask yourself does it do any good to engage in commenting? The answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. It’s not worth losing sleep over, yet a lot of people read comments.

One thing that helped me was from Frank Turek. He mentioned that whenever he debates someone, it is not necessarily to convince the person he is debating. Because here’s the truth. Once someone enters into debate, their pride, ego and public persona is on the line. Almost never do they change their views after they have become a debater.

I’ve realized the same is true for social media. When I respond to someone’s comment, the person feels obliged to protect their opinion, pride and ego. Honestly, the chances of someone changing their mind to whom you respond to is rare.

What you are doing, however, is not about the person you are responding to. You are instead giving a broader depth of understanding to all those who are reading the comments. That’s actually your target audience.

Is it worth it? Yes and no.

Choose your battles.

Answer respectfully.

And if it causes you angst and/or you are losing sleep over other’s words and it becomes tit for tat, just stop.
