I’m not sure any discovery can ever top the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Dead Sea Scrolls were the collection of manuscripts of the Old Testament dated almost 1000 years prior to any other manuscripts. They were dated even prior to the time of Christ showing that the prophecies about Jesus existed prior to his life. That and it showed the incredible preservation and transmission of the historic texts.
But make no mistake, the Megiddo Mosaic is a significant discovery, It was found underneath the Megiddo prison, after which the prison was moved.
Why is this Mosaic so important? It’s because it is dated around AD 230. AND it contains a statement stating that Jesus is God.
Many have falsely said that the Nicene Council of AD 325 came up with the idea of the divinity of Christ. Nothing could be further from the truth. But many today still believe that.
What the Megiddo Mosaic demonstrates, though, is that prior to the Nicene Council, the early church believed that Jesus was God. There is now a literal artifact that attests to this.
Granted, the New Testament writers make it clear over and over and over and over that Jesus is God. And we have manuscripts prior to the Nicene Council. But this artifact is just one more proof of how the early church truly believed that Jesus was the divine Son of God.
Additionally, the piece also includes the names of 5 women: Primilla, Cyriaca, Dorothea, Chreste, and Akeptous. The last one is honored for having donated a table to the prayer hall. The others are told that they should be remembered. Perhaps has a memorial? Or just people of influence and significance? It’s not certain. But it does how women were a strong part of the early church.
This mosaic definitely holds an important place in understanding the early church. It no longer stands when people say there is no evidence outside of the Bible and prior to the Nicene Council that the church saw Jesus as God. It’s right there in stone for all to see.
