To Know Jesus and Make Him Known

The Sarcasm Drips – Job 26

Bildad has actually said something decent about God,, although he didn’t apply the truth of his intent to himself.   Job’s response opens, dripping with sarcasm.

How you have helped the powerless and delivered the arm that is weak!  How you have counseled the unwise and thoroughly explain the path to success!  Who did you speak these words to?  Whose breath came out of your mouth?” (Job 26:2-4).

It’s as if he is saying to Bildad, “Really, you are the only one with such knowledge of God?”  Then he adds to that picture of God.

He stretches the northern skies over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing” (Job 26:7).

He laid out the horizon on the surface of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness” (Job 26:10).

After continuing to describe God, he says something similar to Bildad but which is known by all.

These are but the fringes of His ways; how faint is the word we hear of Him!  Who can understand His mighty thunder?” (Job 26:14).

Bildad has been speaking as if he alone knows that God is unfathomable.  Job’s response is everyone knows that our knowledge of God is only like a faint whisper to who he really is.

While this is two man going back and forth caught in their own argument, it actually is good to remember and dwell on the greatness of God.  We spend so much time looking at our cell phones that we don’t do like thousands of generations in sitting out at night on the ground looking at the stars, pondering the greatness of God.

What we know about him truly is just a whisper.  Our experience is so small.  And yet at times we think we can demand to understand Him and why He does what He does, forgetting that He indeed is God.  The Great God over all the universe.
