“You must not bring any abhorent thing into your house, or you will be set apart for destruction like it” (Deut 7:26).
Not going to lie. Right now I’m trying to lose weight and the first thing I thought of when I read this was chips and salsa. Or chocolate. Or something bad for me. 🙂 If it’s in the house, the chances of eating it are pretty high.
But then another thought came to me more disturbing. I’m honestly troubled at the Christian youth I see reading black and white magic books and Harry Potters and such. Yes, they are well written. But the Lord is clear to have nothing to do with such things (Deut 18:9-13). “It’s Old Testament,” I am told. “And they know right from wrong.”
But again, the Lord said have nothing to do with such things because they are detestable to the Lord. I don’t think such things are now acceptable any more than sexual immorality is now acceptable.
The Old Testament was to teach us the ways of God, why Jesus had to die and how we much we need because of our sin. We are no longer under law but grace, but that draws us even more to live righteously before Him.
A third thought came to my mind. One even more troubling. With the TV and internet, we bring into our homes situations we would not allow into our homes.
I would not allow the hate-mongering, the sexual deviance, and even a couple of rape scenes I saw for a series flash by. ???!!! It’s not that we turn to those stations. It’s that they flash by in previews of upcoming shows or in commercials. And yet we easily allow those things into our homes and into our souls. They desensitize us and especially any young ones.
Our houses and homes are sacred spaces, says the Lord.
