What Trust Looks Like – Ps 27

This Psalm has so much.  It’s just so rich that we should all memorize it, including myself.   Here’s what stood out to me this day.

1) David has such unwavering confidence in the Lord.

His relationship has been tried and tested and David knows he can depend on Him.

“Though an area my deploys against me, my heart is not afraid; though a war breaks out against me, still I am confident” (Ps 27:2).

Such beautiful confidence!  I’ve actually met people who have had faith like this.  They are fearless and God does great things through their life.

2) David sought the Lord’s face.

There’s something beautiful to this.  Of course it brings to mind the saying to seek his face and not his hand.  But beyond this, David dwells on the beauty of the Lord—His character, His ways, his love.

”I have asked one thing from the LORD; it is what I desire; to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the LORD and seeking Him in His temple” (Ps 27:4)

“Lord, I will seek Your face” (Ps 27:8)

In that seeking was great joy.

“I will offer sacrifices in His tent with shouts of joy.  I will sing and make music to the LORD” (Ps 27:6)

David’s faith was a joyful faith.  A faith of singing and dancing and worship.  A faith of great trust and great peace.

It makes me think, am I dwelling on the beauty of the Lord?  The glory of His ways and His character?  Is my relationship with Him one of joy, music and song?  Even dancing?

3) The Lord cares for me

David says this:

Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD cares for me” (Ps 27:10).

There may be more to this than we realize.  In looking back at when his dad presented his sons before Saul to have one selected as a king, his dad left David out (1 Sam 16).  And when it was time for battle David was told to stay home.   As we have also mentioned in previous posts, David seems to have had issues with rejection (“What have I done now?-(1 Sam 17:29; 29:8).   Perhaps his parents did cast him aside.

There are many ways to have parents “leave.”. Sometimes that is through their neglect, through divorce and even through death.  But even if both parents are gone, the Lord will still care for us.  We need to remember this.

David’s faith is inspiring.  He trusted though armies came against him.  He gazed at the beauty of the Lord, dwelling on Him and from it came great joy.  And he knew that even if his own parents abandon him, the Lord still cared for him.

That is beautiful.  And maybe his secret sauce is this:

”Wait for the LORD; be strong and courageous.  Wait for the LORD” (Ps 27:14).
