Just as man as body, mind and spirit, God is also three in one, Father, Son and Spirit. But who do we pray to?
1) We see prayers to Jesus
And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit”(Acts 7:59).
“Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20)
2) Jesus said to pray to the Father
This, then, is how you should pray:“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name (Matthew 6:9)
26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God (John 16:26-27).
We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you (Colossians 1:13)
We see both. So we can’t go wrong.
But based on the teachings of Jesus, there is more weight that we pray to the Father in the name of Jesus. In John, it presents this as a rich privilege that we can ask the Father directly, in Jesus’ name.
And then it seems like what we ask of the Father, Jesus comes to do. To the glory of the Father.
Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son (John 14:13).
Prayer is communication. And since God is three in one, we can pray to the Father or to the Son. But it seems like the Son wants to glorify the Father, and the Father wants to glorify the Son.
Jesus taught to pray to the Father, in his name. And will go and act, to the glory of the Father.
