Uh…isn’t it obvious? Because doesn’t the text say exactly who this is?
Yes. But we have to address it anyway as one faith in particular says this is their prophet. The text in question is verse 16:
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—
We do know that the Helper comes after Jesus. So is this a person/prophet?
Jesus tells us in this context exactly the identity of the helper/advocate:
26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
It’s plain that this is the Holy Spirit. But there are even more reasons to believe this is not a person or a prophet.
The Helper will
- Live inside of you (v. 17)
- Is sent from the Father (v. 26)
- Remind you of everything Jesus said (14:26)
- Testifies of Jesus (15:26)
This would definitely not be the prophet in question. Jesus makes it clear. The Helper He is Talking about is the Holy Spirit.
