It had become a time in history where everyone’s god had a physical manifestation. If you’ve ever travelled the world, there are places like that still today. Their “gods” are in temples and paraded through the streets on certain festivals. They worship them.
It was completely expected that one’s god would have a physical manifestation. For that it was very strange that Israel’s God was “invisible.” How could that be? “Where is their God?” they would ask.
The psalmist says this of their gods. Their gods have
- mouths but can’t speak (v. 5)
- eyes that can’t see (v. 5)
- ears that can’t hear (v. 6)
- noses that can’t smell (v. 6)
- hands that can’t feel (v. 7)
- feet that can’t walk (v. 7)
- throats that can’t make a sound (v. 7)So if one think it through, which one is the strange one? And here’s the sad thing:”Those who make them become just like them,
as are all who trust in them” (Ps 115:8).
You become like what you worship. Let me say that again. Or rather let the Word of God say that again. You become like that which you worship. We become like that which we worship.
Thankfully there’s nothing we would like more for those of us in the Lord.
And what does the Lord do?
He is our help and shield (v. 10).
He remembers us and blesses us (v. 11)
He blesses small and great alike (v. 13)
and so much more.
Therefore let’s praise him now. And eternally.
